Utilisé en année d'initiation de l'Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (Inalco), il précède la Méthode de chinois deuxième niveau conçue pour le niveau Licence I de cet établissement. Chacune des quatorze leçons se divise en deux parties, centrées l'une sur la pratique orale, l'autre sur l'écrit (apprentissage d'une trentaine de caractères, étude d'un texte et exercices).
Des leçons de révision permettent de faire régulièrement le point sur les connaissances acquises. Cet ouvrage a été réalisé sous l'égide de l'Inalco avec la coopération du Guojia Hanyu guoji tuiguang lingdao xiaozu bangongshi, Bureau de la Commission pour la diffusion internationale du chinois (République populaire de Chine).
